ORIOLES HOT , NATS NOT
Man oh man, are my picks downhill. The Orioles have gotten off fast to a six game win streak and looking decent, as I said I like Luke Scott and Nick Markakis but I think Adam Jones is a long way from being a star in the AL . The Tigers lost their first seven games and Kansas City has looked good. I still like Tampa Bay to finish ahead of the Orioles. Is Brian Roberts staying or leaving? Here¹s my National League picks:
East
1. Phillies, loaded last years MVP in Jimmy Rollins, the ³Big Bopper²,
Ryan Howard, and Cole Hamels.
2. Mets, one pitcher does not make a chance.
3. Braves, they have the talent to hang in there.
4. Nats, Ryan Zimmerman, Nick Johnson, Hastings Milledge, Paul LoDuca
and some good arms make them tough. Rob Mackowiak could surprise a few people.
5. Marlins, they have a few players who could help them move up.
Central
1. Brewers, a very talented team that will produce wins. Prince Fielder,
Ryan Brown, Ben Sheets, and Rickie Weeks are top major leaguers.
2. Cubs, they have Lou Pinella and a few talented players but will Kerry
Wood be the closer they think he is? They have a diamond in the rough in
Kosuke Fukudome.
3. Reds, Aaron Harang, Brandon Phillips and Adam Dunn lead a very talented
team that could slip into first.
4. Astros, Miguel Tejada is a plus for this team.
5. Cardinals, Albert Pujols is a stud with a good supporting cast in
Troy Glaus, Rick Ankiel, Yadier Molina and some journey pitchers.
6. Pirates, Jason Bay, Xavier Nady, Freddy Sanchez will produce if they
stay healthy. Look for Paul Maholm to have a good season.
West
1. Arizona, Watch out for 3B Mark Reynolds, he¹s off to a fast start
and should be good all season. Other D¹Backs to watch are Orlando Hudson,
Eric Byrnes, and Conor Jackson. Watch for Justin Upton to have a super season.
Their pitching is great with Brandon Webb, Dan Haren, Doug Davis and Micah
Owings. If Randy Johnson stays healthy watch out!
2. Rockies, a hitting team with Matt Holliday, Todd Hilton, Garrett Atkins
and Brad Hawpe. Jeff Francis, Aaron Cook, Ubaldo Jimenez and closer Manny
Corpas head the mound staff. Ryan Spillborghs could surprise.
3. Dodgers, Joe Torre is a big plus for this team. Brad Penny, Derek
Lowe, Hiroki Kuroda, Takashi Saito are a solid part of the staff. Color Juan
Pierre gone, also Andrew Jones won¹t pan out in Dodgerland. Russell Martin,
Matt Kemp, and James Loney are top young players and watch out for Andy LaRoche
when he¹s healthy.
4. Padres, Jake Peavy, Chris Young, Adrian Gonzalez, Kahtil Greene and
Greg Maddux make San Diego contenders.
5. San Francisco, worse team in the senior circuit.
Two
Terps Named WBCA/State Farm All-Americans
Langhorne earns the honor for the second time in her career
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and State Farm announced the 10-member WBCA/State Farm All-America team on Saturday and the Terrapins' Crystal Langhorne and Kristi Toliver were among the players selected. It is the first time since 1989 Maryland receives two WBCA All-Americans. Senior Crystal Langhorne becomes the first-ever Terrapin to garner WBCA national honors twice, earning the Association's honor last year. Langhorne is also a three-time Associated Press and United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-American, the only player in program history to earn the recognitions multiple times. The 2008 ACC Player of the Year and Scholar Athlete of the Year, Langhorne is on pace to become the first player in NCAA history to lead the nation in field goal shooting, converting on 64.7 percent of her field goal attempts. Maryland 's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, she is one of only 27 players in NCAA history to amass 2,200 points and 1,200 rebounds. She boasts a 65.2 career shooting percentage, which ranks fourth all-time in NCAA history and is also an ACC record. Starting in the most games of anyone in program history, Langhorne reached double figures in scoring 125 times in her career, which is tied for fourth-most in NCAA history. Langhorne is Maryland 's most decorated women's basketball player. Aside from earning multiple All-American recognitions, she is the program's only four-time All-ACC honoree. She is also one of only 10 players in league history to earn first team nods three times. The 2005 ACC Rookie of the Year, she is also the first Terp to be selected to the ACC All-Tournament team four times. She has been awarded the ACC's Player of the Week a school-record six times in her career. Posting 15 double-doubles this season and 59 for her career, she led the team with 17.3 ppg and 9.4 rpg, both ranked third in the ACC this season. Junior Kristi Toliver had been selected an All-American by the AP and USBWA earlier this week, as well. All three national honors are the first of her career. This season, she averaged a career-high 17.1 ppg and an ACC-leading 7.5 apg, which also ranked fifth in the nation. She broke the 30-year old ACC season assists mark, dishing out 275 helpers, handing out at least six assists in 29 games this season. Toliver had seven double-doubles this season, all in points and assists. She also set records for made threes in a season and a career, and career free throw shooting percentage, while also surpassing the 1,000-point plateau. Toliver was named first team All-ACC, after making the third team last year. She earned a spot on the NCAA Spokane Regional All-Tournament team and was the Preseason WNIT Most Valuable Player earlier in the season. Also named to the 10-player WBCA All-America team were Sylvia Fowles of LSU, Erlana Larkins of North Carolina , Angel McCoughtry of Louisville , Courtney Paris of Oklahoma , Candace Parker of Tennessee , Candics Wiggins of Stanford and Connecticut 's Renee Montgomery and Maya Moore. Wiggins also won the State Farm Wade Trophy, presented to the national player of the year. Maryland boasted two All-Americans in 1989 when Vicky Bullett and Deanna Tate were both selected by the WBCA. The Terps went 33-4 this season, advancing to the Elite Eight for the second time in three years.
Toliver
Selected Lieberman Top Point Guard
Toliver voted nation's top floor general
The Rotary Club of Detroit announced that junior Kristi Toliver has been selected the 2008 Nancy Lieberman Award winner, recognizing the nation's top collegiate point guard in Division I women's basketball. Toliver helped Maryland to a 33-4 record and a second NCAA Elite Eight appearance in three years. The criteria for the award are floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman during her career. Sportswriters from across the country determined the award winner and finalists. The honor was first presented in 2000. She is the fifth different player to receive the honor and the first Terrapin. Kristi Toliver, the 5-7 point guard, was named to the 10-member All-America teams by the Women's Basketball Association (WBCA) and the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). Also selected to the Associated Press All-America squad, she averaged a career-high 17.1 points per game, while dishing out 7.4 assists per game, also a career high and ranked fifth in the nation. Toliver was the ACC's free throw shooting leader at 86.0 percent and was second with a 1.70 assist-to-turnover ratio. She had 29 games with at least six assists and seven double-doubles, all coming in points and assists. Named to the NCAA Spokane Regional All-Tournament and first team All-ACC squads, Toliver broke the 30-year old ACC single-season assist record, handing out 275 on the season. She also broke the single-season Maryland records for threes made (78), breaking her own mark set last season, and threes made in a career (210). Toliver also scored her 1,000th career point this season, netting 631 for the season, the fourth-most in a season by a Terrapin all-time. Toliver was selected the winner over finalists Leilani Mitchell ( Utah ), Renee Montgomery ( Connecticut ) and Andrea Riley ( Oklahoma State ). Toliver will be presented with the award at a luncheon on April 23 at the Detroit Athletic Club in Detroit , Mich.

Juan Pierre wants a pass out of L.A. Are the Ravens on the verge of a big trade? Philadelphia maybeŠ Former NFL running back Herschel Walker was one of the Olympic Torch carriers. Kansas City has added Hideo Noma to their pitching staff. I was saddened to hear of the death of Walt Masterson, a pitcher for the Washington Senators in the era when I grew up and he was a great pitcher and person. He was one of the players who lost prime years because of World War II. Two games I remember him for was in 1945 when he came out of the Navy where he served for three years in the submarines. In this game in September of 1945 he bested the great Bob Feller 1-0, Feller was just out of the Navy. The other game in 1947 when he shutout the Chicago White Sox for 16 innings and didn¹t get the win, another pitching hero of mine Early Wynn won that game. Masterson won 78 games and had a 4.5 ERA in his career, he also pitched for the Red Sox and Tigers, he was picked for the American League All-Star team in 1947 and 1948 and started the 1948 game. He was baseball coach at George Mason University , and pitching coach for the Texas Rangers. Walt Masterson was a part of a very good pitching staff that also contained Wynn, Sid Hudson, and Rae Scarbrough. I along with many in my neighborhood like Phil Kapneck, Terry Maher, Phil Sullivan, the late Jack Funderburk, John Pavilides, and Don Saccardi followed the Nats back then. I even took Shirley Carr to a Nats exhibition game at old Griffith Stadium in 1948. My heartfelt condolences go to Walt Masterson¹s family.
My sympathy goes to

John Mappas, one of Maryland's greatest basketball coaches who has excelled at the high school and college level just led his Chesapeake College team to its best-ever season. The team won the Regional championship and had its best record and best winning percentage. I wonder where they are now: John Arnold, Judy Arnold, Judy Berlinger, Dean Ashbaugh, Geraldine Cox, Leon McCauley, Billy Alvis, Carol Fisher, Kay Oliphant Robinson, Eileen Rehrman, and Diane Ford. Maryland Higher Education Secretary Jim Lyons is doing a great job in Annapolis . He is a valued member of Governor O¹Malley¹s cabinet. Dr. Lyons was a super president of Bowie State when I was in the legislature.
WE GET LETTERS
Bill, I appreciated your warm comments about our late friend, W. Ray Huff. Ray was a proud American and proud Marylander whose big smile was only surpassed by his big heart. Like you, Ray cherished the memories of his high school years. While I only got to know "W" in his later years, 1987 was a good year for me, as I met you and Ray that year), Ray will always have a lasting positive influence on me. His grandson, Travis Pastrana (who really resemble Ray), dedicated a recent movie to Ray. It is nice to see that the big guy is not forgotten. Your Friend Patrick from Ellicott City
Bill, A recent column mentioning Herald Harbour brought back many memories as Skip and I approach our 55th anniversary in May. We met there in June 1952 when I was living in Northeast and Skip in Southeast DC . Neither of us had ever been to Herald Harbour and to this day feel it was fate that we both went there that Sunday. We went back several times on our anniversary to reminisce and the last time couldn¹t find the pavilion at the top of the stairs it¹s now homes. Good memories. P.S. can you believe, Terry turn ed 50 yesterday? Pat
Pat, Good report, birthday greetings to Terry. Bill
Bill, Yes thanks for putting me back on the circuit. Really enjoy reading of friends I may know and even those I don¹t know. Take care and continue doing a great job of sports and friends. Bob

BAYSOX, SPOONE SUNK BY SEAWOLVES IN OPENER, 8-3 IN 11 INNINGS
Baysox Opening Night had to wait an extra day, as Bowie and Erie took the field for the first time on Friday night. Pasadena , MD native and Orioles # 8 overall prospect, Chorye Spoone, made his Double-A debut and received a warm welcome from the home crowd. Spoone had a bit of a rocky start in his debut, giving up a lead-off single to Freddy Guzman. Guzman then followed that up by swiping second in the next at-bat, moving into scoring position. Two batters later Jeff Frazier scored Guzman with an RBI single, putting Spoone and the Baysox behind, 1-0. Spoone shook off some early nerves to get Wilkin Ramirez out on strikes and Dusty Ryan to ground out ending the inning. After allowing a lead-off double to Mike Rodriguez and a walk to Nolan Reimold two batters later, Jon Connolly was stellar retiring 17 straight Baysox batters. Connolly next allowed a base runner in the seventh inning. Spoone continued to struggle after getting out of trouble in the first inning. He allowed 2 more runs in the third inning. Jeff Frazier led off with a home run to center. Spoone retired the next two batters, but Ramirez reached on an infield single up the middle. On the next pitch, Erie had a hit-and-run on, and Dusty Ryan doubled to left. Ramirez scored the third run of the game. Spoone did an excellent job of getting out of trouble. In 4.2 innings, he allowed 8 hits, 2 BB's and hit a batter, but only allowed three runs. He was relieved by Romero in the fifth inning with 2 outs and 2 runners on. Romero struck out Kody Kirkland to end the inning. Romero pitched 2.1 innings, allowing no hits, walking 2 and striking out 3. He pitched through the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Nolan Reimold became the first Baysox to reach safely since he walked back in the first inning. With Reimold on first, catcher Ben Davis hit a line drive to center field. The centerfielder took a bad angle on the ball, and it went to the wall. Reimold scored, and Davis had an RBI triple. It was his first triple since 2002, when he was a member of the Seattle Mariners. Lou Montanez drew a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. After Montanez's walk, Jon Connolly was relieved by Matt Rusch. With runners on second and third, Jeff Nettles hit a double down the left field line to time the game at 3. He moved to third on Blake Davis's sacrifice bunt, but Ryan Finan popped out and pinch hitter Kennard Jones struck out to end the inning. Jim Miller relieved Romero to start the eighth inning and he struck out the first 4 batters he faced. After 9 innings, the score was tied at 3-3. Jim Miller retired the side in order in the top of the 10th, completing 3 shutout innings, allowing 1 hit, 1 BB and striking out 4. Juan Cedeno relieved Matt Rusch to start the tenth inning. Cedeno pitched 2 shutout innings without allowing a hit. He walked 3 and struck out 2. In the top of the 11th inning, Rommie Lewis relieved Jim Miller. Danny Worth singled to right field. Freddy Guzman laid down a sacrifice bunt towards first base, and Lewis did not field the ball cleanly. Worth advanced to second, and Guzman was safe at first on the fielding error. Will Rymes then bunted towards third base, and beat the throw to first for a bunt single. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Jeff Frazier hit a bases-clearing double. He scored on the next pitch when Deik Scram doubled to left. Scram would score 2 batters later on a Wilikin Ramirez single. Cedeno allowed 2 walks but shut down the Baysox in the bottom of the eleventh. Erie won 8-3, and Erie 's Jeff Frazier finished the game with 5 RBI.
BAYSOX DOUBLED OFF BY ERIE IN TWO EXTRA-INNING LOSSES, 3-2 & 9-6
The Baysox showed resiliency, mental toughness and excellent pitching depth in their doubleheader against the Erie SeaWolves today. In Minor League Baseball, doubleheader games last seven innings. In the first game, starting pitcher David Hernandez looked strong through the first four innings, but he found himself in trouble in the 5th. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Freddy Guzman hit a groundball up the middle. He moved to second on a balk, and scored on a Will Rhymes double to right. Hernandez then walked Jeff Frazier, and was relieved by Kam Mickolio. Mickolio, the highly-touted relief prospect acquired when the Orioles sent Erik Bedrad to Seattle , walked Deik Scram to load the bases, but got Ryan Roberson to hit a ground ball to get out of the inning. Mickolio would pitch one more inning, allowing a homerun to Wilkin Ramirez. Jonathan Tucker led off the bottom of the 5th inning with a double and scored on a Mike Rodriguez double to tie the game at 1, and Ryan Finan hit a homerun in the bottom of the 7th to send the game to extra innings. In the top of the 9th, Freddy Guzman walked with one out. He went from first to third on a Will Rhymes groundball to first, and then scored on a wild pitch. The Baysox were unable to score in the bottom of the ninth, and lost the first game of the doubleheader, 3-2. Josh Rainwater got the win for Erie , Daniel Lonsberry was charged with the loss for the Baysox, and Danny Zell recorded the save. In the second game, Chris Waters started for the Baysox. He had originally been scheduled to pitch on Sunday in the series finale against the SeaWolves. Waters went three innings, allowing one run on a Dusty Ryan homerun to lead off the third inning. He allowed two hits, no walks and struck out one. In the bottom of the 4th, with the Baysox trailing 1-0, Nolan Reimold led off with a single. Two batters later, Kennard Jones got his second hit of the night, singling to left. The next batter, Ryan Finan, hit a ball that bounced off shortstop Danny Worth's glove, and all three runners were safe.
WINLESS BAYSOX FALL TO R-PHILS IN EXTRAS, 6-3
The Baysox got another solid 9 innings out of their pitching staff, but it wasn't enough as the Baysox fell to the Reading Phillies 6-3 in 10 innings. The Baysox have now used 21 pitchers over 5 games, including 4 extra-inning games. In addition to the strain applied to the bullpen by the extra-inning games, Baysox starters have only gotten out of the 5th inning in 1 of the 5 games so far. Highly touted prospect Chris Tillman got the start for the Baysox, making his AA debut.. It was his first appearance since being acquired in the trade that sent Erik Bedard to Seattle . Tillman retired the first two batters he faced before getting into trouble in the first inning. With two outs, he walked Gregg Golson, then Joey Hammond singled up the middle. Juan Tejeda then hit an infield single to third to load the bases. Jeremy Slayden was hit by a pitch, scoring Golson and Lou Marson drew a walk to score Hammond . Tillman was taken out of the game after two innings because of his pitch count. Jim Miller and the Baysox bullpen took over. Miller allowed one run in three innings and Kam Mickolio and Rommie Lewis each pitched two scoreless innings to hold the Phillies to three runs through nine innings. The Baysox scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game at 3. Jonathan Tucker drew a walk with one out and Kennard Jones doubled down the leftfield line. Mike Rodriguez grounded out to second base, scoring Tucker, and Blake Davis singled to center, scoring Jones. In the 10th inning, the Baysox Bullpen finally gave in. Julio Manon relieved Rommie Lewis to start the inning, and Lou Marson doubled to left. Luke Appert moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt and Bradd Harman was intentionally walked. With runners on the corners and one out, Javon Moran hit a triple to left-center to score two runs and scored on a Neil Sellers sacrifice fly. The Baysox failed to score in the bottom of the 10th, earning their franchise-worst 5th consecutive loss to start a season. The Baysox will look to bust out of their slump tomorrow at Belly Buster Bargain Night at 7:05 p.m. against the Reading Phillies. Fans who purchase a regularly priced lower reserved seat will receive a voucher for a free foot long hotdog, peanuts and popcorn. LHP Chris Waters (0-0, 3.00 ERA) will start for the Baysox, while RHP Drew Carpenter (1-0, 3.60 ERA) will start for the Phillies.
